Protect yourself from sun overexposure! In summer, always apply sun block SPF 15 or more to protect your skin from solar UV radiation. Just five or more sunburns can really increase your risk of developing skin cancer. The sun's rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. so at those times, seek shade or wear protective clothing such as a long-sleeved shirt. Sign up to get free UV alerts.

Heading to the beach? Check out the beach water before you go! We Americans take almost two billion trips to the beach every year, but people who swim at the beach sometimes get sick because the water is polluted. The good news is in the state where the beach is located, you can check with the state office to find out about the beach water - before you go. Beach water quality where you live.

Be extra aware of environmental conditions where older people live! As we age, our bodies become more sensitive to chemicals and environmental conditions. So you should carefully use products such as pesticides or cleaning solvents near areas where older adults live and sleep. Always follow the directions on the product package or label. Reduce exposure for older people.

Read the label! You might not realize it, but on a pesticide container, the label is the law. Pesticide product labels provide critical safety information for handling and use. Pesticides are powerful substances, but when used according to the label they are safe and effective. So always use pesticides safely, at home or in the field. Always read the label. Read the label first!

Exercising outdoors? Regular exercise makes us feel great and keeps us healthy. Before you head out for your workout or run, check the air quality forecast for your local area. You can find out when air pollutants such as ground-level ozone or airborne particles are at acceptable levels where you live. Check your air quality.

Don't let pet waste run off! You can help reduce polluted storm water runoff by just picking up your pet's waste droppings and dispose of it properly. Leaving pet waste on the ground increases public health risks by allowing harmful bacteria or organic material to wash into the storm drain and eventually into local waterbodies. So remember - always scoop the poop! More on storm water runoff.

Pollute less with clean diesel! Encourage your hometown or state to spend road construction funds on newer, clean diesel equipment to help cut air pollution. Contractors, owners, and operators of diesel equipment can retrofit existing diesel engines with new technologies that pollute less, as well as replace old equipment. "Clean diesel" equipment.

Compliance made easy! Compliance Assistance Centers help businesses and local governments save on materials and help you understand and meet your environmental requirements. Compliance Assistance can help you through plain-language materials, Web sites designed for specific industry types or operations, telephone "ask the expert" help lines, and more. Business compliance assistance.

During hot weather, don't top off your gas tank. Refuel your car or truck in the early morning or the evening when it's cooler. A small fuel spill may not seem like much, but every spill evaporates and adds to air pollution, and fuel pumps with vapor recovery systems can feed a spill back into their tanks - after you paid for it. So, in hot weather - don't top off! Don't top off!

Breathe easy! On unhealthy air pollution "action alert" days, wait to mow your lawn until it's cooler in the evening or early the next morning. You help reduce air pollution for everyone near you if you run gas-powered equipment, like lawn mowers, when it's cooler. You also protect your health by avoiding ground-level ozone during the warmest part of the day. Check your air quality now.

Get the lead out! If you're doing work on an older home or school building, be sure to follow lead-safe work practices. Contain the work area and keep kids and pets away. Minimize dust. And clean up thoroughly. Lead is harmful to adults and children, and common renovation jobs like sanding, cutting, or demolition can create lead dust and chips. More on renovating.

Be green from the ground up! Test your home for radon. Radon is a naturally occuring, odorless gas that can seep out of the ground into your home. But as the second leading cause of lung cancer, radon is responsible for over 20,000 deaths a year. Fortunately, a home radon test is easy to do, and homes with high radon levels can be fixed. Get a radon test

Play it safe! Children are curious but they are also more sensitive to substances in the environment. Protect children from accidental poisoning by locking up your household cleaners, pesticides, paint thinners, and other substances. Household products are safe and effective when used properly. Remember to read the label.

Business and the environment are closely linked.

Though some businesses have more obvious impacts on the environment than others, all businesses have some environmental impact, through the products they manufacture or purchase, the energy and water they use, the transportation associated with employee commutes, and many other factors. Similarly, the health of a business is often contingent upon a healthy environment and the availability of abundant natural resources. No business can operate for long without clean water, clean air or a chemically stable atmosphere. By improving the environmental performance of your business, you help to ensure a clean and healthy environment for future generations, as well as a healthy and more efficient economy.

Improving your company’s environmental performance is good for business. Greening your company’s operations makes them more efficient. Waste indicates inefficiency: the more waste your business produces, the less efficient it is. By producing less waste, consuming less paper and energy, and using resources more efficiently, your business can cut costs while enhancing the sustainability of its operations. In addition, acting responsibly toward the environment promotes good will among customers, shareholders, and employees.

If your company decides to enhance its environmental performance, the process will not be completed overnight. Finding ecologically preferable products and services that meet your company’s operational standards in a cost-competitive way requires a long-term commitment. The steps set forth in our website are not meant to be prescriptive, and the list of actions for you to consider undertaking is not exhaustive. Rather, our website seeks to offer suggestions to get you started in the right direction and to help you see results.

When your organization, or you personally in your lifestyle, make a commitment to try to operate and live more sustainably, you´re helping to create a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations of people, as well as a more efficient economy for future generations of businesses.
WHY BE GREEN?
GREEN PROTECTIVE CHOICES

Many of the suggestions in this website can reduce operating costs. Improved efficiency means less waste, which should translate into cost savings. Reducing paper use, for example, saves money. A typical office disposes of about 350 pounds of wastepaper per employee per year. Switching from single-sided to double-sided copying and printing can cut this figure—and corresponding expenditures and environmental impacts—almost in half.

New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI)

This joint venture of General Motors and Toyota, which produces $2 billion of North American automobile purchases, incorporated material efficiency, energy conservation, solid waste reduction, and recycling efforts in their environmental programs, saving the company approximately $4.5 million in 1999. NUMMI now requires their suppliers to use reusable shipping containers for the shipment of parts, which reduced their consumption of cardboard by 60 percent in 1999, accounting for $2.5 million of the company's savings that year while also avoiding 11,000 tons of waste.

Bank of America

By reducing the basis weight of its ATM receipts from 20 pounds to 15 pounds, Bank of America saved more than just paper; this simple move also gained the bank additional savings in transportation, storage and handling costs, to the tune of $500,000 a year.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, the 16th busiest airport in the United States, increased its recycling from 100 tons diverted from landfills in 2001 to 900 tons diverted in 2005, resulting in an annual savings of $178,000.

Oakland Processing and Distribution Center of U.S. Postal Service

By taking steps to remove recyclables from their waste stream and increasing the efficiency of energy and water use, this processing and distribution point of the U.S. Postal Service is saving $500,000 a year.

Ghirardelli Chocolate Company

Ghirardelli redesigned their packaging to incorporate reusable plastic totes for chocolate shipments, eliminating the need to purchase and dispose of 580,000 cardboard boxes every year. This move saves the chocolate company $520,000 annually.

Reduces Risk

We are already living in a carbon-constrained world. In the United States, the question is no longer whether we will set mandatory caps on global warming emissions, but rather when and how these mandatory caps will be put in place. Knowing that these regulations are coming, and that frequent extreme weather events intensified by climate change can disrupt business, it is smart business to take a hard look at how to minimize the risks and costs—and increase the opportunities and savings—for your business in a carbon-constrained world.

Creates Good Public Relations

Environmentally intelligent initiatives help enhance your standing in the community. If your business initiates a program to improve its environmental performance, you can reap public relations benefits if you find ways to publicize your work
.
Boosts Employee Health, Morale, and Productivity

A program to protect the environment can boost employee morale. Using less-toxic products and incorporating “green building” techniques have also been shown to reduce absenteeism and increase productivity.
GREENING IS GOOD BUSINESS

There are many reasons for incorporating environmentally intelligent policies into your company’s operations. They provide a variety of benefits. Among them are:

Response to the Threat of Global Warming

Since the beginning of the industrial age, people have been burning fossil fuels such as oil and coal, releasing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. As these compounds accumulate in the atmosphere, they trap more and more heat. Scientists agree that our world is heating up and that human activity is a primary cause. They predict that global warming will cause increases in droughts, hurricanes, floods, and other severe weather events; significant rises in sea level; and the spread of diseases once confined to the tropics. Whole industries, from farming in the Midwest to skiing in the Northeast and the Rocky Mountains, are threatened.

The projected costs of global warming to our economy and public health are staggering. Fortunately, solutions exist. Smarter procurement practices, improved energy efficiency, and greater use of renewable energy can help reduce the threats of this global crisis.

Public Health

Improving the environmental performance of your building operations helps to protect public health. Fossil fuel–generated energy and transportation produce air pollutants that can cause respiratory illness and increases in hospital visits. In addition, coal-fired power plants are the world’s number-one emitter of mercury, a neurotoxin that is now found in rivers and streams throughout the world. Mercury can cause developmental and neurological disorders, especially in children. By improving the efficiency of your building, your business will contribute less to these environmental hazards.

Reducing your company’s environmental footprint can improve public health protection in other ways as well. Cutting paper consumption helps reduce the toxic chemicals emitted by the paper industry, including dioxin, one of the most toxic chemicals known to humanity; using less-toxic cleaning products and low-emissions paints can improve the indoor air quality of your office and the health of your employees; installing low-flow faucets and toilets can help ensure that there will be enough clean water for future generations.

Clean Air

The transportation and energy sectors are the two biggest causes of global warming, acid rain, and smog. Cars and power plants also release into the air small particles that can impair respiratory function and cause cancer. By increasing energy efficiency, promoting alternative transportation, and supporting renewable energy, your company can contribute to cleaner air.

Clean Water

Almost half of the world’s population lives without access to a reliable source of clean water. In the United States, water pollution affects many of our nation’s rivers, streams, and lakes. Two of the biggest causes of water pollution in the United States are agricultural and urban runoff. Agricultural runoff contains pesticides, fertilizer, and sediment. Many pesticides can cause cancer and other illnesses, and the nutrients in fertilizer can deplete oxygen in water, making it unsuitable for fish and other aquatic life. Urban runoff occurs when rain flows over impervious surfaces like roads, roofs, and parking lots. Runoff collects industrial pollutants, including oil and gasoline, trash, and toxic heavy metals like mercury and cadmium. Agricultural and urban lands are not the only sources of water pollution. Mining, forestry, and other industries also make significant contributions.

Your business can make a difference by purchasing products that cause less water pollution. Organic foods, for example, are made without pesticides and fertilizers and therefore cause less water pollution. Buying renewable energy reduces the amount of water pollution associated with coal production, and purchasing recycled paper reduces water pollution from virgin paper mills, which are among the most polluting factories in the world.

Your business can also help prevent water pollution by controlling and capturing rainwater and preserving water-permeable surfaces (such as grass and gravel), which can reduce urban runoff.

Preservation of Biodiversity

Since the rise of life on earth, the planet has experienced five major periods of global extinction. Now we are entering a sixth major extinction, but this one is being caused by humans. As urbanization and agriculture encroach on natural habitats, there is less habitat and sustenance for the millions of other species that coexist with us. These threats to biodiversity are made worse by the threat of global warming.

By responding to the threat of global warming—through energy efficiency, renewable energy, and transportation innovations—your company can help preserve biodiversity. Buying paper made with postconsumer recycled content reduces pressure on natural forests and water supplies. By implementing polices that protect and conserve water, your company can help reduce the risk to aquatic species. And by promoting these policies, your business can help raise awareness and inspire others to do the same.

GOING GREEN ARTICLES
GOD BLESS AMERICA!

The world of big business is making daily headlines by "going green" after discovering that what's good for the planet is also proving good for business
IBM recently announced "Project Big Green," a $1 billion initiative to reduce energy consumption by offering new lines of energy-efficient IT products.

Wal-Mart is adding solar power to more than 20 stores.

PepsiCo is buying renewable energy certificates to offset its carbon footprint. Even major banks and energy firms are being asked by shareholders to prove that they, too, are going green.

It's not just the biggest businesses that are attracting new customers and shareholders and reaping huge profits by "going green." Small businesses also are growing eco-profits by embracing surprisingly inexpensive strategies to add value to their products, services and brand.

Consider these innovative examples:

- Bob Smith of Mad River Brewing Company in Blue Lake, California, has attracted positive publicity (and new customers) by promoting his efforts to reduce his small firm's waste output and take other environmentally conscious steps. In turn, he has received welcome positive publicity from the press. "What PR budget? That is our PR budget," he told the Albuquerque Tribune about "going green" to market his business.

- In Florida, Natalie Kelly formed Home Therapy Cleaning Services, which uses only nontoxic, all-natural cleaning products for her home cleaning business. She used to sell aromatherapy candles from her home, she told the St. Petersburg Times, but today uses an aromatherapy baking soda blend to freshen carpets.

Here's what you can do:

- Two inexpensive ways any small business or solo entrepreneur can go green are to change light bulbs to energy-efficient bulbs and use biodegradable cleaning products.

- With that done, tell your customers and the media about these simple ways to go green. You will have just earned instant credibility as a green business, and also as a media resource for simple, effective ways to
"go green."

Many communities online and offline are forming networks to exchange energy-saving ideas for home and business. Form your own energy network, enlisting neighborhood businesses that will welcome another opportunity to show they're going green, too. The plus for you is that you will have just positioned yourself and your business as a community environmental leader.

- Copy what the New York Times called "Phase 2" of the corporate response to global warming. Partner with an environmental group. Travelocity invites customers to donate an extra $10 to $40, which goes to the Conservation Fund to plant trees to offset the carbon used by a client to take a trip. Whole Foods invites customers to buy a $5 "wind power card" that goes to Renewable Choice Energy to build wind farms. What local environmental group can you partner with to promote on your Web site (and vice versa), to set aside a day that a percentage of profits will go to that organization or to make their fliers available at your business?

- Make use of readily available, free information to hand out with your business literature or to make available in your office. For example, create a one-page flier on your letterhead inviting clients to calculate their own carbon footprint by visiting http://multimedia.wri.org/safeclimate_calculator.cfm.

- Go deeper green! Attend a "green" conference in your community or region, and promote your attendance. (Go to Google.com and type in "green" and "conference" and your area to find out when and where they are scheduled.) Write a "green" article on simple ways you are going green and submit it to one of the dozens of "green" Web sites and blogs that invite reader contributions. It's a great way to market your smart ideas and your business!

Green Energy Policy Outlook
Over the last decade soaring gasoline and natural gas prices have brought in focus, again and again, the role of green energy - in other words renewable energy - in providing electricity, replacing fossil fuel use, and curbing the growing craze for power transmission equipment. But in terms of awareness, adoption and implementation of green energy imperatives, the United States, in a substantial measure, lagged behind the West European counterparts and Japan, who took giant strides in implementing green energy technologies and policies. Unfortunately, America is ranked as low as the 22nd energy efficient counties.

Surprisingly, since the early seventies our electricity consumption had tripled. Our ineffective middle-east policies and oil-politics, had thrust us in perpetual war-games, and made us nonchalant about the impending long-run hazards of mankind. Also, the responsibility of failure rests on partisanship, special interest advocacy groups and ineffective political rhetorics of the past regime. During pre-election campaign President Obama had been very critical about our flawed energy policies, and his much-advertized vision for energy policy had placed the significance and exigency of green energy policies at the forefront.

His draft policy substantially emphasized the salient efficacies of the renewable energy. While emphasizing the the importance of green energy, he was poignantly observant about the result of climatic degradation and the alarming issues like shrinking polar ice-caps making sea levels to rise, extreme weather conditions wreaking global havoc, severe recurrent droughts, the menace of migrating tropical diseases and the log-term threat of sheer extinction of numerous species. In this article, I would like to recap the policy directions he thought about. The green energy solutions, he propagated in his campaign had two dimensions - the short-term and the mid-to-long-term initiatives.

The short-term solutions, as propagated by President Obama in his campaign, focus basically on providing some immediate relief to the consumers from soaring energy costs. He talked about extending emergency energy rebate to the households "by requiring the oil companies to take reasonable share of their record- breaking windfall profits and use it to provide direct relief worth $500 for an individual and $1,000 for a married couple."Other short-term prescriptions included initiation of regulatory measures to plug the loopholes in Commodity Futures Trading Commission, so as to control excessive oil-price speculation. The campaign also recommended to "swap light and heavy crude, release oil from Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to cut process."

The mid-to-long-term solutions outlined in the campaign release, emphasized heavily on adoption and implementation of green energy .The areas of emphasis encompassed "two major energy challenges -our dependence on foreign oil and global climate change - both of which stem from our current dependence on fossil fuels for energy." On enhancing self-reliance on energy and tackling climatic change, the measures propagated, include (i) Implementation of an economy-wide cap-and-trade system to significantly reduce carbon emissions (ii) Invest in the green energy future and creating about 5 million new jobs in related areas,(iii)Making vehicles energy efficient,(iv)Increase the supply of domestic energy,(v) Diversify our sources of energy, with primary emphasis on green energy sources, and finally (vi) Promote commitment to energy efficiency with a view to lowering energy usage and costs. The campaign had some great things on green energy initiatives. it stated that a federal Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) would be set up to require that 10 percent of electricity consumed in the U.S. is derived from green energy- i.e. clean, sustainable energy sources like solar, wind and geothermal by 2012.

We noticed his strong advocacy for developing and deploying clean coal technology, because Carbon capture and storage technologies hold enormous potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as we propel our economy with domestically produced green energy. It outlined the need for developing the next generation of sustainable bio-fuels and providing suitable infrastructure for bio-energy growth. It recognized, "advances in bio-fuels, including cellulosic ethanol, biobutenol and other new technologies that produce synthetic petroleum from sustainable feed stocks offer tremendous potential to break our addiction to oil." Now, any green-energy advocate , irrespective of any party color, may raise the question- what is the progress, or where the current administration stands in terms of fulfilling the promises? The answer is, now it is too early for performance analysis. There is definitely a laundry-list of priorities that the current administration is exhaustively engaged in. It obviously includes,as the primary focus, the gigantic tasks of reforming the banking and financial sectors to arrest the economic down-turn. The next is the healthcare reform which is currently gaining heavy momentum, with Obama spearheading and pushing hard on it. But truly, energy policy reform does occupy a significant position in the list of priorities. We can patiently wait and see.
GOING GREEN IS SO MUCH SIMPLER
THAN MOST PEOPLE THINK
 by: Collin Rojas

An increasing number of people are now wanting to do their part to save the planet due to the worsening problems caused by global warming. Unfortunately, numerous people assume that going green is costly and time consuming. Read on to discover several immediate things you can do to get on on the path to living green.

Recycling is the top way to start. A lot of people continue to place glass and aluminum items in their normal garbage even though recycling is not that hard to do today. In the US, it's not hard to locate a trash service that offers glass and aluminum recycling choices. Many people still continue to discard these items even though recycling bins are not hard to find. It merely takes a few minutes to wash off the cans and bottles before placing them into the recycle bin.

Newspapers are another item that overburden our landfills. Virtually all people will merely take their daily paper and toss it in the garbage when they are done with it. But, there are many other uses that you can get out of your newsprint other than poring over it it. Did you know that you can keep your windows clean using newspapers? If you're tired of seeing small white fragments and streaks on your windowpanes after you clean them with paper towels and cleaner, try to use old newspapers instead. Several community groups run regular paper drives. Merely compilepile all of your old newspapers, put them in a stack, and see if the paper drive organizers will come to your location and pick them up.

One more thing that could help you to start to live green is to begin walking a bit more. Lots of people routinely drive short distances merely to buy one thing at their local corner market. If you just walk to the store, not only could it take less time, because you won't have to locate a parking spot, but you will be saving money on gas and helping to save planet Earth by not burning those fuels.

If you wish to save even more on gas, take the chance to car pool when you can and only mow your lawn two times a month instead of weekly. A gorgeous lawn is good to have but skipping an additional week before you mow again shouldn't significantly affect it. Using a manual push mower like those more normally used many, many years ago will help to save the environment even more. Numerous hardware shops still carry this type of mower.

When people make up their mind to try green living, it's easy to make a few lifestyle modifications that will benefit our environment. Likewise, you can find lots of info all over the Internet on other ways to start living green, you only have to look for it.
STAIN REMOVER

Green Living means a better life for mankind, a much better way for the Earth and very much better for our future, period. Green living; it's a term and a way of life that has become increasingly popular and a much better alternative to our energy wasting life of today. There are many ways to go green as new companies are springing up and current established companies change their products to fit the lifestyles that many people are choosing to adopt. For anyone that doesn't understand what green living is, there are many advantages and reasons to do it, as well as many ways to go green in our everyday lifestyles.
What is Green Living?

Living green is a sustainable living type of lifestyle. It's a lifestyle in which an individuals make every effort to reduce the amount of natural resources they use and the control the amount of waste they create to benefit the planet we live on called Earth. It aims to promote a lifestyle that is eco-friendly through various means such as energy, transportation, and waste. To go green, an individual usually has to change their whole outlook as it pertains to our earth and how the choices they make are affecting it. As trendy as it has become, it takes more than a couple of changes to really be considered living a green lifestyle. Sustainable living is a big commitment.

With the advancement of the eco-friendly agenda, it has gone from something individuals do and it has made its way into the business world as well, as companies try to keep up with the trend, some from a legitimate standpoint of caring for the environment and others from a financial standpoint of trying to cash in on the hoopla. Even then, it's still advantageous to try living the green lifestyle.

Why Choose Green Living ?
The earth's resources are being used at an alarmingly excellerated rate. In order to keep our planet from being used of all it has, especially non-renewable resources, people must consider what amount of these resources they are using. The benefits of living this way outweigh the added responsibility that's taken on by practicing living a green lifestyle.

Health - There are many health benefits. Green transportation such as biking or walking, gives a person exercise and reduces pollution. Living green includes buying local, which gives individuals fresher options. Organic grown reduces the amount of chemicals and pesticides in the food you eat.

Money - Using natural, renewable resources saves money like natural light instead of electricity or filtered water in reusable bottles instead of bottled water. Buying local supports local vendors and helps a person's community, while cutting out the cost of transportation. With solar and wind technology, utility bills can also be cut.

Future - it prepares all of us for the future by saving it.

By using renewable resources, cutting waste, and reducing pollution, the future of the earth can be secured for a your lifestyle and for your friends and family.

Ways to Achieve Green Living

Living green can be achieved through several means.
Transportation - Changing the mode of transportation such as walking, biking, or electric vehicle are ways go green.

Food - Buying local food, organically grown food, and growing a garden are all green ideas.

Waste - composting food waste, reusing things, and recycling reduce the waste in landfills.

Green living entails making changes across every facet of your life. It's a lifestyle change that can benefit individuals, your family, your future, and the Earth itself.

Of course if your not interested or focused on such a lifestyle or just don’t care about it, then it is of course your loss. No one can force you to do anything, but it would be one of the wisest life changes you could ever imagine if you did!
GOING GREEN IS NOT JUST FOR BIG
BUSINESS – YOU CAN GROW ECO-PROFITS TOO!
